Got Water? Tips for Increasing your Water Intake


We’ve all heard it many, many times: drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. But most of us rarely do. Unfortunately, we’ve developed bad habits (soda, anyone?) and water just doesn’t have that appeal. OR, we tell ourselves we’re too busy to keep track of our water intake throughout the day. But here’s the truth: YOU NEED WATER! Let’s review why:


All of those seem like pretty good reasons to increase your water intake TODAY! But I  know that getting enough water can be a real struggle. Hopefully I can give you some tips to make it a little easier:

  1. Use a straw (trust me, for some reason this works)
  2. Buy a pretty water bottle
  3. Set an alarm every hour & drink it up!
  4. Add a lemon wedge or fruit slices to your water OR freeze lemon/lime/fruit wedges in ice cube trays (with water around them) and then put them in your water bottle for a fun, flavorful version of ice
  5. Drink 2 cups first thing in the morning to activate your internal organs
  6. Drink 1 cup before every meal (this aides in digestion)
  7. Drink 1 cup every time you go to the bathroom
  8. Drink 2 cups 2 hours before bedtime (if I drink too much right before bed I’m up all night using the bathroom…TMI sorry!)
  9. Compete with a friend (challenge groups are great for this!)
  10. Buy a 64oz water container and finish it everyday–I have friends who’ve bought those huge soda mugs from the gas stations and use it for water.
  11. And if you do slip up….Drink 2 cups of water for every non-water beverage!

Really, the biggest thing to remember is that drinking water is a habit we must form. If you’re not used to drinking it, the change will be hard (see my post last week on changing) and it takes time, will power, and practice to make a habit stick. If it seems too overwhelming to get those 64 oz in start small and increase your intake a little each day.

And finally, just for fun, I thought this infographic was great! I wouldn’t say eating your water replaces drinking it (or gives you the excuse to drink a soda because you ate watermelon-haha!), but it’s a good way to up your water intake if you’re looking for some other creative ways.
